Enabling H5P (Sysadmin)

To allow teachers to upload and play H5P files in itslearning, the system administrator needs to enable two extensions: a plugin for the rich text editor and an application for standalone H5P resources. Both are configured under Manage apps.

1 Overview

H5P (HTML5 Package) is an open-source framework for creating interactive web content. itslearning supports uploading and playing .h5p files in two ways:

H5P plugin – allows teachers to insert H5P content inside the rich text editor, displayed alongside other content in a page or content block.

H5P application – allows teachers to add H5P content as a standalone resource on the course Add page, with support for assessment, deadlines, and reporting.

Each extension must be set up separately. Both are configured from the same location: Admin > Manage apps.

2 Prerequisites

3 Set up the H5P plugin

The H5P plugin allows teachers (and optionally students) to insert H5P content into the rich text editor. To set it up, go to the Manage apps page and follow these steps:

1. Click "Add plugin".
    
2. Select the hierarchy (for example, a single school or the whole site) by clicking "Search for hierarchy" and selecting the appropriate level.
   
   
3. Click "Browse app library" and search for "H5P". Once found, click "Include this app".

4. Choose which roles the plugin should be available for by selecting "Administrators", "Teachers", and/or "Students".
5. Optional: Change the name of the setup. By default, it uses the hierarchy name combined with the plugin name.
6. Optional: Uncheck "Add to default location for each user who meets the criteria above" if you do not want to add the plugin by default. Users will then need to find and add the plugin themselves.
7. Click Save.
   

4 Set up the H5P application

The H5P application allows teachers (and optionally students) to add H5P content as a standalone resource from the course Add page. To set it up, go to the Manage apps page and follow these steps:

1. Click "Add app".
2. Select the hierarchy (for example, a single school or the whole site) by clicking "Search for hierarchy" and selecting the appropriate level.
3. Click "Browse app library" and search for "H5P". Once found, click "Include this app".
