Course Export: Teacher Guide
TABLE OF CONTENTS
NOTE: This feature will launch first in Germany and is scheduled to roll out globally at the start of August.
1. Introduction
The Course Export feature allows teachers to export the content and structure of their courses from itslearning. This is useful when transferring content to other platforms or when teaching across multiple institutions using different LMSs.
2. Prerequisites
Before you begin:
Your system administrator must have enabled the Course Export module for your course.
You must have the Teacher or Administrator role in the course.
Course content must be located in the Resources section (items under Plans will not be exported).
3. Supported Export Formats
You can choose from the following formats when exporting a course:
Common Cartridge (IMSCC): A widely supported standard format (version 1.1 only)
Moodle Backup (MBZ): Compatible with Moodle, optimized for version 4.1 but generally works with newer versions as they are typically backwards compatible.
4. Supported Resource Types
For more detailed information about what is included in the export, consult technical documentation about the cartridge formats.
Content types not supported by the selected format will be excluded from the export.
5. Step-by-Step Export Guide
Note: When you export a course from itslearning, the structure will always follow the structure under Resources, and not the structure under Plans.
To export your course:
- Navigate to the course you wish to export.
- Click the three-dot menu (⋯) in the top right and select Settings.
3) In the menu, click Course Export.
4. Choose your preferred export format:
- Common Cartridge (IMSCC)
- Moodle Backup (MBZ)
5. Click Start export to begin the process.
You may leave the page – the export will continue in the background.
Once complete, you will receive a notification under the bell icon.
6. Downloading Exported Files
- Return to the "Course export tool"
- Export history is now available on the same page you exported from.
- Click Download to save the file to your computer.
Information: Exported files are available for download for one month.
7. Importing into Other Systems
Moodle: Use the Restore function to upload MBZ files. See Moodle's official documentation for steps. (Links to Moodles documentation. This is not maintained by itslearning)
Other LMS platforms: Follow your platform’s instructions for importing IMSCC (Common Cartridge) files.
8. Support and Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues:

Solutions: Check that the export module is enabled in your course (ask your administrator if it's not visible)
Problem: All content isn't in the exported file
Symptoms: Exported file is missing expected course materials
Solutions: Verify that your course content is located in Resources, not just in Plans
Problem: Target LMS doesn't recognize the file format
