Updating Test 2.0 to Test 3.0

TABLE OF CONTENT

1 Introduction

Since November 2023, it is no longer possible to create new tests using the old test tool (Test 2.0). The old test tool will be fully discontinued by the summer of 2026. Teachers and students can still access old results, but to continue using tests with new students, they must be updated to Test 3.0.

Test 3.0 provides more flexible scoring options, improved feedback features and better support for mobile devices. Tests created in Test 3.0 can also be shared in the itslearning Library.

2 Prerequisites

You must have teacher rights (or equivalent editing rights) in the course containing the test you want to update.

3 Update Your Test

  1. Open your old test (Test 2.0).
  2. A banner appears at the top of the page suggesting you update your test.
  3. Click Update test.A screenshot of a computer
AI-generated content may be incorrect.
  4. A dialog box appears explaining what will happen during the update. The new test tool has limited support for rich content in answer alternatives — only one image or equation and plain text will be copied.
  5. Click Update test to confirm, or Cancel to abort.

A new Test 3.0 resource is created, automatically copying the introduction, question groups, questions and settings. The original Test 2.0 test (including any previous submissions) remains available as a reference.

4 Check Your Updated Test

4.1 Review the Conversion

Once the copy is complete, a success message appears above the introduction. The new test is set to Not visible to students by default, allowing you to review it before publishing.

Any questions with issues are marked with an exclamation icon on the Questions tab. Review these questions and adjust content where needed.

4.2 Check Questions for Missing Content

If a question contains missing or unsupported content, a banner appears at the top of the question editor. Unsupported content (for example, rich text in answer options) is removed automatically. A warning message appears if an answer alternative contained only an image or other rich media that is no longer supported.

5 Settings Changes

Some settings have not been implemented in Test 3.0 or have changed. The following table lists the affected settings:

SettingChange in Test 3.0
Learning objectivesOnly imported learning objectives are supported. Learning objectives created in the course are not copied.
Set masteryNot supported.
Submit after deadlineNot supported.
VisibilityThe copied test always starts as hidden (not visible to students).
Scoring methodIgnored. Test 3.0 uses flexible question-level scoring.
Criteria for completionNot supported.
Use feedback – on questionsGeneric feedback on test level is not supported. Feedback is copied to each question.
Use feedback – on alternativesOnly supported for Multiple choice/response.

Categories are automatically converted to question groups. If a category in the old test had the draw amount set to zero (previously meaning "draw all"), this is converted to having random selection disabled. All questions in the group are used, which is the same behaviour as before.

6 Question Type Changes

Question typeChange during update

Multiple ChoiceLimited formatting. Only the first image or equation is copied.
Multiple ResponseCopied as Multiple Choice with "Allow multiple answers" enabled. Limited formatting — only the first image or equation is copied.

7 Troubleshooting

Symptoms: Images are missing in the copied test.

Cause: Images added via URL may time out during the copy process.

Solution: Download and re-upload the image in the old test, then try the update again.

Unknown error during copy

Symptoms: The update process fails with an error.

Cause: System timeout or unsupported content.

Solution: Retry the update process. If the error persists, check for unusual content in your questions.

Missing or unsupported content

Symptoms: Questions are flagged with a warning icon after the update.

Solution: Open each flagged question on the Questions tab, review the content and adjust manually where needed. The original Test 2.0 test remains available as a reference.
